MSU Recap
Sometimes you're the hammer and sometimes you're the nail. MSU had most of us feeling like the nail, but we'll bounce back. I love this team and I'm very proud of the work you've put in thus far. You're a responsible group of young people. You show up everyday with your equipment, you've scheduled your lives around MHSXC, and I think you're performing well. You all know that September is a rough month for us. The TDF summer program prepares our athletes for the rigors of phase 3, but it doesn't prevent fatigue. It all also doesn't prevent illness. To stay healthy, it's imperative that you stay hydrated, refrain from sharing water bottles, get plenty of sleep, and fuel your body properly. It's normal for you to feel tired and sore at this point. I understand the process, but I'm interested in knowing what you're thinking and how you're feeling after Friday. Please take some time to complete this Reflection & Feedback Form.
I'm not interested in making excuses for poor performances, but I am interested in using feedback to make improvements as the season goes on. That being said, you faced a difficult task on Friday. By most standards, the weather was perfect, but for distance runners who have trained in unseasonably cool temperatures for the past few weeks, it felt a bit warm. High(er) temps combined with a soft course and the ridiculous race sizes / crowded course, produced times about 30 seconds slower than Tuesday.
It's not easy to come back on two days rest. I think that was especially true this week. Jamboree 1 was our first 5k of the season and most of you ran well there. Physically, I'm sure you were still feeling the effects of Tuesday's race when you toed the line at MSU. Emotionally, I know most of you were very excited to run fast at MSU. Prior to the race, we talked a lot about maintaining composure when the race gets hard- about not throwing in the towel when things get tough. This is something on which we will continue to focus heading into this week and for the rest of the season.
We will continue to focus the tenets laid out this summer:
- Take care of one another
- Work hard everyday
- Operate with a growth mindset - focus on the process
- Balance stress & recovery
- Have fun & enjoy one another's company
In doing so, I'm confident you'll reach the goals you have set for this season. Keep in mind our next "PR Goal Meet" will be Coaching Legends on 9/30. Until then, we have work to do!!!
Congratulations to Colin, Chloe, and Noah. Running a PR on Friday was a big deal. Well done! Colin didn't race at Jamboree 1, but has improved a great deal from his freshman year, so a PR in his first race of the season was expected. Great job, Colin. Keep up the good work. Chloe and Noah are freshmen who looked solid through the entire race. I distinctly remember seeing them both early in their respective races and thinking, "there's the look of a focused racer." They both moved well the entire race. Hubba Hubba.
Like Colin's PR, Nick Wohlfeil's massive yearly improvement was no surprise. Nick has worked really hard since last season and will continue to outshine last year's times by massive amounts.
On a day when most athletes ran considerably slower than their season best, Noah, Chloe, Craig, Jake, Matt, and Brady held their respective races together well.

Although Jake wasn't thrilled with his time, he knew he had raced well. He did. He got out well and continued to move up, finishing as our 3rd man in the varsity race.
All in all, we got together at the end of the meet, smiled for a picture and went on enjoying the runner lifestyle.
Love the team.
Trust the process.
Expect excellence.
Accept the results.
