Jefferson Recap
Now that's more like it!!! What a way to bounce back, MHSXC. Saturday's conditions were brutal and you responded admirably. Well done.
The varsity girls started off on the right foot. I'm not trying to be punny. As a matter of fact, most of you probably should start with your right foot back, and left foot forward, so starting your race on the left foot would better allow you to start off on the right foot. But, I digress.
KC Thornton looked incredibly confident as she led the div 1 race from very early on, winning in a season best, 19:55. She's been working hard since camp and experiencing the fatigue that comes with September. It was nice to see her hard work pay off with a W. Also, she was the recipient of a super cute prom-pos... er, hocoprosal.
Chloe Gunter was our only other medalist in the girls race. Chloe ran a PR, improving :36 over her previous best!!! Due to a dental procedure, Chloe got a late start with her summer training, but as the season moves on, I expect that she will continue to improve greatly. Allison Rathbun returned to action and ran alongside Chloe until the end of the race, placing 33rd. It's great having Allison back in the lineup and I look forward to watching her get back in race shape. Ella Foshag PR'd by 1 second to finish 4th for us and 34th overall and Ashley Rathbun rounded out our top 5, finishing 44th.
The varsity boys ran smart in the heat and looked great doing so. They followed the race plan perfectly, going out controlled and moving up after the mile. We finished 2nd as a team in the div 1 race and all 5 scorers medalled. Matthew Parran sat back for the first half of the race, but just prior to the 2 mile, he took a commanding lead and never relinquished it. He finished as overall champion in 16:34, just 4 seconds off of his season best. Craig Latty also moved well in the 2nd half of the race, going from around 20th place at the mile all the way up to 6th. Next came Jake Maas. The senior captain ran another tough race. Like Craig and Matt, Jake moved well in the 2nd and 3rd mile. Chad McCarthy ran a solid race for us, finishing as our 4th man and 18th overall.
As we wrapped up a difficult week of training, finished phase 3, faced unseasonably hot conditions, and raced on a course not known for PR's, Nick Manor once again ran a near perfect race. Nick went out controlled, but kept his eyes on our 2,3,4 pack. He continued closing the gap on them the whole race and finished just one place behind Chad, running a PR of 17:53.
Winning a cross country race is a big deal. With race entries between 60 and 850, very few athletes get to experience crossing the finish line first. Matthew winning was a big deal and he deserves the POM status, but Nick Manor's race was nothing short of brilliant. Well done. Can't wait to see everyone "Manor" a race this season.
With 2 races this week, training takes a backseat to racing. BTW, racing 5K is a great interval workout - 5 x 1000I with 0 min rest. We've made it to the end of Phase 3 and although we had to rest a bunch of girls this past week, you are well trained and ready to make big improvements. We've been talking since June about the rigors of Phase 3. You've handled it well and now we get to put the focus on racing and racing well. Rest & recovery remain priorities during this time. Treat yourselves like athletes and trust the process. It's going to be awesome.
