Updates in RED - 10/28/15
At the parent potluck meeting, I made the statement that it's my job to be tough on and to challenge our athletes and the parents job to love them. Laura Parran posted this on Facebook today. I've read it before, it's how I interact with Kate & Ollie and I like it so much that I thought that I'd share it here. It's good stuff.
SPORTS PARENTING IN 10 SENTENCES
1 word: Hi. Greet your child when they get in the car with “Hi” before you ask about practice, the score of the game or homework.
2 words: Have fun. In all likelihood you’ve heard this statistic: 70% of kids quit sports before they turn 13 for the primary reason that they are not having fun. Encourage and remind your kids to have fun.
3 words: Tell me more. Before forming an opinion or dispensing advice, ask for more information from your child. This will force them to tell more of the story and give you more information as to what is actually happening.
4 words: Good job. Keep working. Doc Rivers, head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers and parent of a NBA player suggests these four words. Rivers notes that as parents we are often tempted to say more and analyze their kids performance, but saying only this might be what’s best for the kid who simply needs support.
5 words: What’s new in your world? Ask your kids general questions that are not about gymnastics. Even if the reply is “nothing” it gives you the opportunity to share something about your day.
6 words: I love to watch you play. Best six words ever.
7 words: So what do you think about that? You know your opinion, so before you jump to tell your child what it is, ask what his/her opinion is. You are not only learning more about what your child thinks but are also helping develop critical thinking skills.
8 words: Is there something I can do to help? Before you give a solution or an action plan, ask if that is what the child really wants. Sometimes all the child wants to do is blow off some steam, and we jump directly to “solving” the problem.
9 words: You are more important to me than your achievements. You may be thinking that of course this is true. But remind your child of it. In the absence of hearing this from you, your children might think that one of the reasons you love them is because of what they do, not because of who they are.
10 words: No matter what, I’m glad that I am your parent. To be loved wholly and completely for exactly who we are, flaws and all, is the greatest gift one person can give another. Please give that gift to your child.
This got me thinking about another recent post by alum Paige Bork -
Paige and I agree that one thing I do well as a coach is challenge student athletes to be their best. It's always my goal to convince athletes that the struggle and sacrifice is worth it. As a parent and a coach who cares unconditionally for his athletes, I love the list above. I especially love the #9. Running shouldn't define you.
Still, the work ethic, perseverance, and dedication it takes to be a great runner is the same set of traits that leads to a successful life. This is true for most distance runners. It's TEAM, FAMILY, TROJANS that makes us special. I hope that when you leave MHS, you leave with lifelong friends and the capacity to care for those around you.
We've had fun this season.
I've loved watching your improvements.
You are more important to me than your running achievements.
No matter what, I'm glad that I am your coach.
This season has been a great success. Yes, there's been adversity, illness, injury, and maybe a few hurt feelings, but it's been so much fun.
All that's left now is to run the race(s) you've trained so hard for. Let Saturday be your reward for your sacrifices and struggles.

Recap -
SEC Red Championshion @ Hudson Mills
Thursday did not go as expected, but in the end both teams finished well in our tough conference. The girls ended up 3rd overall behind Saline and Pioneer and the boys were 2nd to Saline.
I maintain that the training has gone well and our best racing is still ahead. Many of you have just one race left, but 14 of you have the State Finals to look forward to!!! Of course the competition isn't going to just let us jog to a top 3 finish at the Regional. We will have to FINISH harder. Be confident. You're ready. The extended forecast looks good. Those of you in the PROM race will be able to cap your season with a PR!!! There is a chance of rain during the week. You'll want at least 3/8" spikes in for Saturday.
Although she'll be ready to go for the Regional, we rested Allison Rathbun and at the last minute, decided to sit Lydia Malik too. To add to our struggles, the first 6 girls, including our Elisabeth LaPrad, took a wrong turn prior to the mile. Ellie had a good start and looked to challenge for a top 3 spot. Sadly, the wrong turn placed her nearly last at the mile. KC Thornton ran a solid race, finishing at 20:12 in 7th place to earn her first "All League" designation. Natalie Maas continued to improve. Her 20:23 PR placed her 11th and also earned her All SEC Red honors.
An under the weather Sidney Towalski once again got out hard but faded towards the end of the race. It will be there on Saturday, Sid. Keep doing what you're doing!
Autumn Green stepped up as our 5th finisher, running a 22 second PR to finish 23rd and Cheyenne Bolton continued to run well gaining valuable varsity experience that will pay off in the future.

Our boys went for it and came up short. We tried to win, looked great through the mile, but just didn't have it later in the race. Like the girls, the boys were struggling a bit with nagging injuries and illness. With a week of tapering before Saturday's Regional, we will be rested and ready to compete.
It was good day to be an Anthony. Anthony Wohlfeil placed 4th, while Skyline's Anthony was 1st and Saline's Anthony 3rd. Our Anthony ran a great race from start to finish. His 16:25 was his 2nd fastest ever and earned him All SEC Red honors. Noah Dawn turned in his 3rd best time ever, finishing 8th in 16:40 and also earning All League. Back from a foot injury, Curtis Jewell ran an aggressive race and showed great resiliency to finish 14th in 16:55. Matthew Parran and Cameron Bitzer rounded out our scorers finishing 16th (17:00) and 28th ( 17:32) respectively. Matt has been struggling with illness for over a week. For Matt an everyone else, I'm praying we got illness out of the way early and will be healthy and ready to go for Saturday. Bitzer went out faster than he ever has before and faded in the end. I'm so impressed with Cameron's progress. Keep up the good work, Cam. It'll be there at the Regional and State meet. Chad McCarthy struggled a bit with a lingering hip issue. I have no doubt that when he's feeling better, he will run a huge PR.

Some cool things happened in the JV race too. Logan Harvell, Jacob Maas and Grant Prater looked good in a pack throughout most of the race, but it was Logan who had the best finish. Those three could have a major impact on the varsity lineup next fall. Chase Blackwell continued to improve. His 26:10 was 23 second PR.
In the girls JV race, Madyson Farris led the way, running under 23:00 for the fourth time this season Nadia Lake ran a 21 second season best and Crissy Maniaci PR'd by a whopping 1:22!!!
Airport Invitational
Madyson Farris and Grant Prater both medalled. Madyson's time was 48 seconds faster than last year's and Grant improved by 47 seconds!
I know many of you are still bit banged up. The plan is the same for this week. Take it easy, lots of ice and stretching, and get ready for one more race!!! Let's end the season riding the PR train!!!
