YOU DID IT.

"I am seeking an inner satisfaction that only I can determine, not the recognition of applause, headlines..." Frank Shorter

Congratulations to Joey Humes and Dominic Paoletti on their individual accomplishments and to other county teams that qualified: Dundee boys (champions), Bedford boys, & Erie Mason boys.

It's nice to celebrate individual accomplishments and cross country lends itself well to doing so.  We were grateful to celebrate our individual qualifiers last year, but cross country is a team sport and I'm so pleased & proud that we qualified both teams to the state finals.

BEST Day Ever

It's easy to get mixed up in superlatives.  Ask my family.  I must have 20 "favorite movies" and  the "best song I've ever heard" changes weekly.   So, it makes sense that all last night I kept thinking, "_______ had the best race of the day" and "_________ was the best thing that happened at the Regional."  And, while I teach my Juniors that everything is an argument; everything can be debated with evidence, let's all agree that the best thing that happened at the 2015 MHSAA Regional was TEAM FAMILY TROJANS -- our 8th man, so to speak.

I wish I would have had the presence of mind to count how many we were in total.  Can I go all superlative-y and say it was "the most" supporters we've ever had, or "the best" group at Lake Erie Metropark?  One thing is for sure, when I look back on the 2015 XC Regional, I'll remember the love and support of our Team and Family.

So here's a, by no means exhaustive or hierarchical, list of super cool things from yesterday's Regional Championship.  Admittedly some are selfish, but I'm the one writing the blog ;)

  • The best "8th man" - What an incredible crowd we had!
    • Parents, grandparents, friends, aunts, uncles, neighbors, alumni, brothers, and sisters
  • The optimum achieved goal
    • We took care of one another and had a lot of fun doing so
  • The outstanding team achievement
    • It took incredible resolve and a total TEAM effort to qualify both teams to the State Finals for the first time since 2009
  • The ideal coach's family
    • Besides our MHSXC family.  It meant so much to me to have Emily, Kate, Ollie, my mom and Miles at the meet.
  • The best is yet to come
    • Chad McCarthy has done everything right.  He gained Regional experience and will gain State Finals experience.  In the coming years, he will be a formidable force in our League and Region.
  • The top food
    • Granola, fruit, bagels, french toast, chocolate chip pancakes, meat - oh the breakfast meat!
  • The ultimate "game changer"
    • Lydia Malik - With 1K to go, Allison Rathbun got sick, really sick.  As she started to lose ground, Lydia recognized the need to move up.  Running on a very sore hip, last year's individual state qualifier "took one for the team", passed at least 8 girls and helped the team to 2nd place!!!
  • The prime "surprise guests"
    • Richard & Ann Brady.  I'm so grateful they were with us.
  • The supreme PR streak
    • Katie Tayler has run a PR at three straight Regional Meets - 27:59 (FR) - 27:27 (SO), 26:54 (JR)
  • The first-rate leader
    • Anthony Wohlfeil ran a great race and after the race his leadership was outstanding. With his teammates full of confusion, heartache and physical distress, Anthony responded with compassion, concern and direction.
  • The incomparable PR
    • Madison Shroyer, saves the best for last to run a 41 second PR!
  • The chief display of toughness
    • Autumn Green - Fell early in the race and was stepped on.  With 4 spike punctures on a very swollen knee, she finished the race, still breaking 22:00.
  • The unsurpassed sportsmanship
    • Logan Harvell congratulating Grant Prater on earning his trip to MIS by running a PR and finishing with the team's 6th best time of the day.
  • The unrivaled accomplishment
    • Grant Prater running a 10 second PR to finish with the 6th fastest time of the day and earning a spot on the state finals roster.
  • The preeminent display of toughness (I already told you I'm bad at superlatives)
    • Allison Rathbun - I'll spare you the details on this one and just tell you that it's tough to race while projectile vomiting.
  • The prime TEAM sentiment -
    • I may be the only one who witnessed it
      • Elisbeth LaPrad mouthing "TEAM, TEAM, TEAM" in the last K as she reeled in Wyandotte's #1 girl.
  • Hugs
    • There were lots and lots of hugs!
    • I even shared a semi-awkward hug with Saline's Coach Mike Smith
    • I hope Madyson Farris' hug let her know how much she means to me and this team.
  • The par excellence freshman
    • Ok, technically the Bedford girl finished .6 seconds ahead of her, but have you ever had a conversation with KC Thornton?  What an incredible human being.
  • The principle "season game changer"
    • Natalie Maas ran a full minute faster yesterday than at last year's Regional.
  • The ace performer
    • On a course that averaged 30 seconds slow, Captain Sidney Towalski was just 8 seconds off of her PR and finish as our 3rd girl.
  • The transcendent rebound and recovery -
    • Noah Dawn, Curtis Jewell, and Cameron Bitzer
      • All three were disappointed at the end of the race, but they all "pulled themselves up by the bootstraps" and by the end of their cool down had put things into perspective.  All 3 were invaluable to the team accomplishment.
  • The inimitable race rebound-
    • Matthew Parran's PR happened at our first 5K of the season.  Battling illness most of October, he hasn't shown measurable improvement.  I'd argue that yesterday was his best race of the season.  With the 17th fastest time heading into the Regional, he placed 13th.

      MHSXC 2K15 - Week 12

      Updates in RED - 10/28/15

At the parent potluck meeting, I made the statement that it's my job to be tough on and to challenge our athletes and the parents job to love them.  Laura Parran posted this on Facebook today. I've read it before, it's how I interact with Kate & Ollie and I like it so much that I thought that I'd share it here.  It's good stuff.

      SPORTS PARENTING IN 10 SENTENCES

1 word: Hi.  Greet your child when they get in the car with “Hi” before you ask about practice, the score of the game or homework.
2 words: Have fun.  In all likelihood you’ve heard this statistic: 70% of kids quit sports before they turn 13 for the primary reason that they are not having fun.    Encourage and remind your kids to have fun.
3 words: Tell me more.  Before forming an opinion or dispensing advice, ask for more information from your child.  This will force them to tell more of the story and give you more information as to what is actually happening.
4 words: Good job. Keep working.  Doc Rivers, head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers and parent of a NBA player suggests these four words.  Rivers notes that as parents we are often tempted to say more and analyze their kids performance, but saying only this might be what’s best for the kid who simply needs support.
5 words: What’s new in your world?  Ask your kids general questions that are not about gymnastics.  Even if the reply is “nothing” it gives you the opportunity to share something about your day.
6 words: I love to watch you play.  Best six words ever.
7 words: So what do you think about that?  You know  your opinion, so before you jump to tell your child what it is, ask what his/her opinion is.  You are not only learning more about what your child thinks but are also helping develop critical thinking skills.
8 words: Is there something I can do to help?  Before you give a solution or an action plan, ask if that is what the child really wants.  Sometimes all the child wants to do is blow off some steam, and we jump directly to “solving” the problem.
9 words: You are more important to me than your achievements.  You may be thinking that of course this is true.   But remind your child of it.  In the absence of hearing this from you, your children might think that one of the reasons you love them is because of what they do, not because of who they are.
10 words: No matter what, I’m glad that I am your parent.  To be loved wholly and completely for exactly who we are, flaws and all, is the greatest gift one person can give another.  Please give that gift to your child.

This got me thinking about another recent post by alum Paige Bork -

Paige and I agree that one thing I do well as a coach is challenge student athletes to be their best.  It's always my goal to convince athletes that the struggle and sacrifice is worth it.  As a parent and a coach who cares unconditionally for his athletes, I love the list above.  I especially love the #9.  Running shouldn't define you.
Still, the work ethic, perseverance, and dedication it takes to be a great runner is the same set of traits that leads to a successful life.  This is true for most distance runners.  It's TEAM, FAMILY, TROJANS that makes us special.  I hope that when you leave MHS, you leave with lifelong friends and the capacity to care for those around you.
      We've had fun this season.
      I've loved watching your improvements.
You are more important to me than your running achievements.
No matter what, I'm glad that I am your coach.
This season has been a great success.  Yes, there's been adversity, illness, injury, and maybe a few hurt feelings, but it's been so much fun.

All that's left now is to run the race(s) you've trained so hard for.  Let Saturday be your reward for your sacrifices and struggles.

A Growth Mindset - Yes you can. It just hasn't happened yet.

      Recap -

SEC Red Championshion @ Hudson Mills

Thursday did not go as expected, but in the end both teams finished well in our tough conference. The girls ended up 3rd overall behind Saline and Pioneer and the boys were 2nd to Saline.

I maintain that the training has gone well and our best racing is still ahead.  Many of you have just one race left, but 14 of you have the State Finals to look forward to!!!  Of course the competition isn't going to just let us jog to a top 3 finish at the Regional.  We will have to FINISH harder.  Be confident.  You're ready.  The extended forecast looks good.  Those of you in the PROM race will be able to cap your season with a PR!!!  There is a chance of rain during the week.  You'll want at least 3/8" spikes in for Saturday.

Although she'll be ready to go for the Regional, we rested Allison Rathbun and at the last minute, decided to sit Lydia Malik too.  To add to our struggles, the first 6 girls, including our Elisabeth LaPrad, took a wrong turn prior to the mile.  Ellie had a good start and looked to challenge for a top 3 spot.  Sadly, the wrong turn placed her nearly last at the mile.  KC Thornton ran a solid race, finishing at 20:12 in 7th place to earn her first "All League" designation.  Natalie Maas continued to improve.  Her 20:23 PR placed her 11th and also earned her All SEC Red honors.
An under the weather Sidney Towalski once again got out hard but faded towards the end of the race. It will be there on Saturday, Sid.  Keep doing what you're doing!
Autumn Green stepped up as our 5th finisher, running a 22 second PR to finish 23rd and Cheyenne Bolton continued to run well gaining valuable varsity experience that will pay off in the future.
2015 All SEC Red - KC Thornton & Natalie Maas

Our boys went for it and came up short.  We tried to win, looked great through the mile, but just didn't have it later in the race.  Like the girls, the boys were struggling a bit with nagging injuries and illness.  With a week of tapering before Saturday's Regional, we will be rested and ready to compete.
It was good day to be an Anthony.  Anthony Wohlfeil placed 4th, while Skyline's Anthony was 1st and Saline's Anthony 3rd.   Our Anthony ran a great race from start to finish.  His 16:25 was his 2nd fastest ever and earned him All SEC Red honors.  Noah Dawn turned in his 3rd best time ever, finishing 8th in 16:40 and also earning All League.  Back from a foot injury, Curtis Jewell ran an aggressive race and showed great resiliency to finish 14th in 16:55.   Matthew Parran and Cameron Bitzer rounded out our scorers finishing 16th (17:00) and 28th  ( 17:32) respectively.   Matt has been struggling with illness for over a week.  For Matt an everyone else, I'm praying we got illness out of the way early and will be healthy and ready to go for Saturday.  Bitzer went out faster than he ever has before and faded in the end.  I'm so impressed with Cameron's progress.  Keep up the good work, Cam.  It'll be there at the Regional and State meet.  Chad McCarthy struggled a bit with a lingering hip issue.  I have no doubt that when he's feeling better, he will run a huge PR.
2015 All SEC Red - Anthony Wohlfeil, Noah Dawn
Honorable Mention - Curtis Jewell, Matthew Parran

Some cool things happened in the JV race too.  Logan Harvell, Jacob Maas and Grant Prater looked good in a pack throughout most of the race, but it was Logan who had the best finish.  Those three could have a major impact on the varsity lineup next fall.  Chase Blackwell continued to improve.  His 26:10 was 23 second PR.

In the girls JV race, Madyson Farris led the way, running under 23:00 for the fourth time this season  Nadia Lake ran a 21 second season best and Crissy Maniaci PR'd by a whopping 1:22!!!

      Airport Invitational

Madyson Farris and Grant Prater both medalled.  Madyson's time was 48 seconds faster than last year's and Grant improved by 47 seconds!

I know many of you are still bit banged up.  The plan is the same for this week.  Take it easy, lots of ice and stretching, and get ready for one more race!!!  Let's end the season riding the PR train!!!

Thanks again for all of your help this season.

While enjoying the team's success this season, we can't ignore our awesome support system; our amazing family.

We are one of the host schools for the MHSAA State Cross Country Finals.  My responsibilities include measuring and lining the course, and providing 22 adults to direct traffic and check parking credentials at MIS on race day.  For our efforts, the team receives approximately $1500.

      MHSXC 2K15 - Week 11

      Update - 10/21/15

As we keep sight of our goals, tomorrow's meet becomes crucial for all.

This is what we train for - championship season!!!

With Saline one point ahead in the overall standings, the boys have a chance to make history.  With a win tomorrow, Monroe will win its first ever SEC cross country championship.   It won't take a miracle or "out-of -body racing", but it will take your best effort and a few big PRs.  There's only one focus - RACING!!!

For the girls, after finishing 5th last year, we look to finish a solid 3rd behind state ranked Saline (4th in Div 1)  and Pioneer (7th in Div 1). Tomorrow will serve as an excellent dress rehearsal for the Regional.  Focus on getting out quick but controlled and racing & reacting in the middle mile.  The last mile is where we need to see a breakthrough.  You girls are so fit and strong.  Believe in all of the miles you've logged since June. Count on one another to find another gear!!!

JV - You have 3 races left and conditions for tomorrow look perfect for a PR.  Run smart, even splits!  Race the clock and come home happy!!!
