We survived Tuesday's heat at practice and then had a great turn out at the potluck. Thank you family!!! Information from Tuesday's meeting is at the bottom of this post.
Thursday's workout was one of the best in years. The team continues to move forward together and the season looks brighter and brighter.
I hope you're all enjoying your holiday weekend; the last weekend before school!?!? It's been a fantastic summer and I just want to say thanks.
Summer conditioning is our gift to you. It may not always seem like it and I'm sure there are times when you feel like you're showing up for Coach Mydloski and me. You're not.
Hopefully you've now realized or will soon that summer conditioning is an opportunity for you and your teammates to be the best you can be. With that being said, THANKS! I love coaching and would keep showing up no matter the size or enthusiasm of the crowd, but it sure is a lot more fun to have so many enthusiastic and intrinsically driven runners.
Now we're under way with the season. Practice is official, uniforms have been distributed and the first meet is just days away!!! I hope you're as excited as I am. I'm so proud to be the coach of this team. I'm proud of the student-athletes that make it up and I'm proud of the way we work together. I'm thankful for the families that have raised you and thankful that you're now part of our MHSXC family.
Now that I've gushed over you a bit, I'm asking two things of you.
- When you have the chance to do good, take it. You've probably heard me say, "motivation is a myth." All of the cat posters and rah rah quotes in the world aren't going to make you great. Life is full of choices and I'm asking that you make yours good ones. I'm asking that you find out what you love about this sport and anchor yourself to it. I'm asking that you stick with us until graduation, that you finish the race.
- Choose to be a STUDENT-athlete.
- Choose organization and time management to make the most of your learning. If you're doing your best and still struggling in class, choose to ask for help.
- Choose to respect your parents and teachers.
- Choose running as lifestyle, not just a sport
- Choose a good night's rest. Even on Friday and Saturday nights, when your friends are going to parties and staying out way too late, choose sleep. Your body needs it.
- Choose to eat well and hydrate. To train the way you train and expect your bodies to respond, recover and race well, you must fuel it properly. Not sure what that means? Here's a resource to get you started. Power Back Diet
- Choose to act out of love. Our team is going through an awesome transition right now. Both the running and the relationships are improving!!! Keep caring for one another and the sky is the limit.
- It's nice to be good, but it's great to be nice!!!
- It's better to serve than be served.
- Choose to follow the plan. We take most of the guess work out of training and racing. You're given a road map to success. Follow it and you'll find yourself quite pleased at the end of the season.
- Choose to do your best. Every drill, stretch, strengthening exercise, workout, warm up, cool down, and race has a purpose. Complete each with your best effort and focus.
- Communicate with us. I try my very best to give you all of the information you could possibly need to be successful, but I also need to hear from you.
- Injuries - Soreness is part of running. Pain shouldn't be. I need to know when any of the following are true:
- Soreness becomes pain and gets worse as you run.
- Pain is beyond a 5.
- You notice swelling.
- You have to change your stride due to pain.
- You notice pain when just walking around.
- Your performance is suffering.
- You start to smell like lasagna (just seeing if you're actually reading this.)
- When any of the above are true, Brandon, our trainer, will evaluate the injury. He will determine if further medical care is required.
- You should never miss practice due to soreness or pain, we need you with us to follow the protocol above.
- If you have to miss practice, we need to hear from your parents. They can:
- Call - 734-693-3326
- Text
- email - scoles@monroe.k12.mi.us or mhsxc@gmail.com
- Keep us in the loop. If there's something in your life that's affecting your mood, learning, or training, we want to know about it.
